APRIL SDBA MONTHLY MEETING AND FREE DEMO

April Demo: Colophons, by Denise Stephenson and Monica Moran

Join book artists Monica Moran and Denise Stephenson to learn all about colophons—their uses and many possibilities! Denise and Monica have received images of colophons from many of you to include in the demo. If you have more colophons you'd like to share from your book arts, please send them to thecreativebeast@gmail.com and denise.stephenson@gmail.com by Wednesday, April 5. The text in the photos should be readable, but the photos themselves need not be perfect. Let them know in what book and where in the book the colophon occurs if it isn’t self-evident from the photo.

Let’s Share What We’ve Been Doing!

Its been a while since we’ve had a meeting devoted to sharing our own projects so let’s do it! This month we’re inviting everyone to show us what they’ve been doing. You can create a PowerPoint, do a simple screen share of photos, or hold your book up to the camera. What ever works for you!

Laurel just made her first PowerPoint to prepare for this meeting and she discovered it was very easy! You can just drop in photos and then narrate them, or you can add text. One caution: video over Zoom is not very effective so try to avoid that.

We’ll give everyone a few minutes, or longer if time allows, to show us what they’ve been up to!

Me, Myself and I: Memoir and the Narrative Self: San Diego Book Arts Monthly Meeting

San Diego Book Arts Monthly Meeting via Zoom

Jane Sprague.png

Me, Myself and I: Memoir and the Narrative Self

“We tell ourselves stories in order to live.” —Joan Didion

We are our most trusted source of material when it comes to writing and art-making. What do you notice? What memories and life events do you turn over in your mind? What story have you wanted to tell from your life, your noticing? How could you convey this narrative with language and images in book form?
In this workshop we will write in response to prompts and images to dive into our inner narratives. We will use memory as a kind of malleable substance to shape and develop for our books. We will write and share with others before editing our material into a single sheet mock-up book.

Artist Bio: Jane Sprague is a writer, publisher and educator whose books include The Port of Los Angeles (Chax P), Imaginary Syllabi (Palm P) and various chapbooks. Her poetry was most recently published in The Chicago Review. She edited and published Palm Press for ten years while working as a Lecturer in English at CSULB and an Associate Faculty member at Bard College in NY. She was a Teaching Artist for Lincoln Center’s Institute for the Arts in Education in upstate New York (Pre-K-12) for a decade and has taught writing and book arts workshops at a maximum-security prison for women, nursing homes and elsewhere for people whose voices are often left out, silenced or unheard. She lives in Long Beach, California wedged between the former tribal lands of the Tongva nation and the ports of Long Beach and L.A.

April Monthly Meeting w/ Tico Star demo led by patsy monk

Learn the steps for the simple but elegant Tico Star as designed by Maria Sinayskaya. Once the original version is perfected it is easy to try out the variations included in an instruction sheet that will be provided.

Artist Statement from patsy monk: As a nurse and health coach, health is important. As we practice any craft, we are reducing stress. Stress is a physiological problem that affects the body and mind and origami tackles both of these by engaging them equally. As the mind starts to get absorbed, you give in to the moment and let yourself be distracted.

The practice of Origami is a perfect ‘take along’ craft that is easy and fun to do.

Note: Times are PST.

SDBA Monthly Meeting

Wed. March 10, 2021

10:00 a.m. PT via Zoom

Gina will be teaching us her own unique take on The Piano Hinge binding which was originally created by Hedi Kyle. Directions can be found in a variety of books including: Non-Adhesive Binding: Books Without Paste or Glue by Keith Smith, Cover to Cover, by Shereen LaPlantz and Creating Handmade Books, by Alisa Golden. It is a relatively simple binding wherein the spines of the pages are notched and woven together using sticks, string or even paper. The book can be displayed open in the round or closed with the spine to the side or on top. This versatility and simplicity make it a good structure to have in your repertoire.

Make Writing Happen: A Workshop for Book Artists
Led by Jane Sprague

A word after a word after a word is power. —Margaret Atwood

Make Writing Happen is a one-hour writing workshop for book artists who want to develop and expand their relationship to text in their books. This workshop will guide participants through a series of writing and thinking exercises to explore ways we can generate content for our book projects. We will write together to push past writing styles and strategies we are already comfortable with in order to try out new tactics for making writing happen. We’ll develop a cache of writing topics/subjects/entry points and content to return to for when we make books.

If you are currently working on a book project you may wish to focus on experimenting with language for that work. This workshop is also a chance to jump into writing in order to see what you might create and pick up some new tools for working with language in ways that excite you.

Materials needed to follow the demo or do it on your own after the meeting will be provided with RSVP.
